We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ma Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
Ma Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing was one of the demonstrators injured on 9 February. Doctors confirmed that the young woman was in critical condition and was being kept on life support, until a hospital official confirmed her death this morning, 19 February.
We reiterate the call by the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar made on 9 February for the Security Forces to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, and avoid using disproportionate force against demonstrators, including women and girls.
