The original Kaman is extinct and their generations are now mixed-blood with Rohingya (Bengali in original usage) because they get married to people with the same religion, Rakhine Ethnic Affairs minister said in his interview with The Irrawaddy Burmese Edition.
“Most Arakanese people who are with strong patriotism had argued for the case for recognizing Kaman as an ethnicity of Myanmar. At that time, U Ne Win added Kaman under the tribe list of Rakhine people on organizational grounds. In fact, some people pointed out that the original Kaman (from the times of Sherdota) does not remain these days. They are extinct,” The Irrawaddy stated the remarks of U Zaw Aye Maung, Rakhine Ethnic Affairs minister in Yangon Region government.
The minister gave an example of the arrival of Portugese pirates at Thanlyin under the reign of Taungoo King Nat Shin Naung in 1610 regarding the existence of the original Kaman people. “ ..If so, can Portugese from the times of Nga Zinga (Portugese mercenary) demand their ethnicity?” the minister asked.
“The elder Arakanese people objected the inclusion of the name of Kaman under the tribe list. But, U Ne Win forced adding Kaman ethnicity in the list. There were about 2000 or 3000 Kaman people at that time. Their generations get married to people with the same religion who are illegal immigrant from Bangladesh.
That’s why Bengalis become Kaman and vice versa,” the minister said when The Irrawaddy asked him his comment on Kaman people.
U Zaw Aye Maung added that he invited Kaman people for the event held for Rakhine State Day, but it caused problems with Rakhine Buddhist monks, and he does not invite Kaman people to official ceremonies as an ethnic group.
“I invited Kaman elders to the event in Rakhine community hall. (They asked me) why did you invite Muslims here?,” he shared his experience.
The Irrawaddy removed some racist remarks of the interview a few hours after it posted on its website.
